The Soundmaker

Lowell’s sound lives in the space between composition, experimentation, and pure sonic play. Some pieces begin as field recordings, some as improvised performances, others as tiny audio accidents that refuse to be ignored. This page gathers a rotating selection of the work that defines him as a soundmaker – music built from exploration, instinct, and the thrill of seeing how far a sound can be stretched before it breaks, and what new worlds appear when you follow it.

The Divine Mother

Through this performance featuring modular synths and soaring choral samples, Lowell conveys a sense of peace, a place of solace. Using layered audio and a mix of live and sampled performance, he crafts a sound that makes the listener feel safe and at home.

The Divine Father

A “Soundmaker” can be simply described as “something that makes sound.” Nature offers plenty of examples: wind rustling through the trees, water cascading over stone, wolves howling in the night. Somewhere nestled among all of that – is Lowell.

Notice the similarities with The Divine Mother, but also feel the definitive masculine tones that run throughout. These two performances in tandem help illustrate the layering artistry at hand.

Process

(noun)a series of actions that produce something or that lead to a particular result

Listening first.

Every piece starts with listening – to rooms, to people, to broken machines, to old recordings that weren’t meant to survive this long.

Building from fragments.

Lowell works in layers: cutting, looping, stretching and re-contextualizing sound until it stops behaving like “material” and starts behaving like a place.

Blurring disciplines.

Composition, improvisation, sound design, ethnography, archiving – they’re not separate boxes here. They’re tools on the same bench, grabbed as needed.

Collaborations & Comissions

Lowell regularly collaborates with filmmakers, choreographers, game designers, and other artists who need sound that doesn’t come from a stock library. If you’re working on a project that calls for something stranger, slower, or more deeply textured than “normal,” he’d love to hear about it.
